The following is general information we have gathered
pertaining to western saddles for wither
tracings, saddle bars &
gullets and fitting of the rider. Please email us if you need further information at smilingw@juno.com.
To make a Wither Tracing:
- Form a wire (fence wire seems to work well) to the horse's withers where
the back edge of the gullet should rest being sure that the wire is perpendicular to the
ground.
- Trace the inside of the form of the wire onto a 8 1/2" by
11" sheet of paper.
- Please mail to the address provided above above or attach it as a
standard 8 1/2"X11" with a 4" mark cross the image and send
via email to smilingw@juno.com . Kindly include your contact
information and any other pertinent information (such as "horse is
growing", "swayed back", "straight backed",
"built downhill", or "gaited").
Western Saddle Bars & Gullets will
vary a bit from tree maker to tree maker. Essentially:
- Semi QH-- gullets are normally 6 1/4" to 6 1/2" with these bars having the most
"dish" (aka "rocker") of the tree from front to back
and the least amount of "flare" under the rider's seat from side
to side.
- QH (sometimes called "Three-Quarters" QH or
"Regular QH")-- gullets are generally in the
range of 6 3/4" with these bars having a bit less
"dish" and a little more "flare"
- Full QH-- usually 7" or 7 1/4" gullets with these bars having
minimal "dish" and more "flare".
- X-Wide QH (available on some of our custom saddles)-- gullets are 7
3/4" with more "flare".
- Draft-- typically an 8" gullet--very flat--with these bars having
almost no "dish" and a whole lot of "flare".
- Arab-- gullets about 6 1/2" (similar to semi QH) but more
"flare" and "dish" to suit many Arabs.
- Pony-- gullets about 4 1/2" to 5" with the back portion
of the tree designed to fit the typical pony conformation.
- Gaited-- gullets generally from 6 1/2" to 7" and with
the bars shorter and designed to fit most gaited horses. Many
gaited horses can take other bars providing that the rigging is located
back from the 7/8ths position.
Fitting the Seat Size to the
Rider:
- With the rider sitting in a western saddle and his/her legs hanging as
they would while upon a horse in motion, there should be roughly 2 to 3
fingers' distance between the rider's thigh and the base of the fork (aka
swell or pommel). Two fingers' distance provides more security while 3
fingers' distance allows for more "moving room" and often more
comfort on long rides.
- The "finger size" should be that of the rider's.
- One should consider if "growing room" will be needed.
- We advise going with the larger seat size when in doubt or if a half-size
would otherwise be in order.
